Balance

I had a very different subject that I wanted to write about today, but, alas, time has been my enemy as of late.  It’s funny how life can give you fodder for your writing, isn’t it?

So with that, let’s talk about balance, specifically life-balance.

Generally, life-balance can be broken down into two major categories:  Work and Home.  For those of us who don’t have the priviledge of working from home, work can approach and exceed 50% of our day.  Add sleep and the home portion of our day/night becomes pretty small.

Just for the sake of my own personal writing challenges, I’m going to break out the home portion of my day, assuming a 10-hour work day (including commute).  That’s actually down by 2-hours from what it used to be, btw.

So, that leaves me with 14-hours of home time.  I’ve got to immediately remove 8-hours for sleep.  6-hours left.  That should be plenty of time to get everything done, shouldn’t it?

I used to think so.

But, I’ve got to eat, and there’s errands/jobs around the house and there’s time with the family.  4 more hours (minimum) spoken for.

Still, that leaves 2 hours to do some of the personal projects that I’ve got.  That should work, even for me.  If I wrote for 15 minutes a day, I’d be well into all the writing projects I’ve got planned and still have almost 2-hours of day left.  I’d have all my SWN posts ready in advance, I’d have that third book almost done and the second one on the way to find a publisher.

But, I procrastinate… and I don’t always follow my own suggestions to firmly set concrete goals.  Maybe it’s time to get back into that mode again.

And, I must confess, I’ve been allowing a couple little guilty pleasures get in the way too… like actually reading again.

What to do, what to do?
