2010, A Mixed Bag, Really

On this, the end of 2010, I find myself reflecting on the past year as so many of us do on New Year’s Eve. As much as I would love to say the past year was the best ever, I’m forced to concede that it’s probably more of a draw than a win. On the plus side (might as well start positive, right?): Sold first, then second, then third short stories EVER. For someone (namely me) who was desperate to get his work published, I count this as a major achievement. Sold first novel, a YA story called “Mik Murdoch, Boy Superhero”. In this particular episode she talked about two things that really resonated with me. The first was the sense of entitlement some people seem to have, specifically entitlement about getting published. There were times where I’ve felt that sense of jealousy towards people who “seem” to have hit the jackpot and been published the first time out. Usually what happens is I do additional research and discover that these people have years and YEARS of […]

Get Published Episode 46 – Jaym Gates & Erika Holt talk Anthologies

I first met Jaym Gates and Erika Holt via Twitter. Jaym started out as a writer, added reporting, administrating and promotional work and then made a joke on twitter that led to her becoming an editor. Erika writes speculative fiction, is an intern for award winning anthologist Jennifer Brozek and reads slush for Scape, the e-zine of YA speculative fiction. Both ladies have a lot of great things to say about putting together an anthology including common mistakes writers make and why some stories are chosen while others are not. In the feedback section, I have a question from DanDanTheArtMan about podcasting my stories and what I’ve learned. Thanks for listening. Show Notes 00:00 — Opening – Get Published Episode […]
