I was listening to Mur Lafferty’s “I Should Be Writing” podcast this morning. Specifically episode 171. I love Mur’s podcast because she is so honest about her own writing journey and because a lot of things she talks about are things I’m going through too. In this particular episode she talked about two things that really resonated with me. The first was the sense of entitlement some people seem to have, specifically entitlement about getting published. There were times where I’ve felt that sense of jealousy towards people who “seem” to have hit the jackpot and been published the first time out. Usually what happens is I do additional research and discover that these people have years and YEARS of […]

Get Published Episode 46 – Jaym Gates & Erika Holt talk Anthologies
I first met Jaym Gates and Erika Holt via Twitter. Jaym started out as a writer, added reporting, administrating and promotional work and then made a joke on twitter that led to her becoming an editor. Erika writes speculative fiction, is an intern for award winning anthologist Jennifer Brozek and reads slush for Scape, the e-zine of YA speculative fiction. Both ladies have a lot of great things to say about putting together an anthology including common mistakes writers make and why some stories are chosen while others are not. In the feedback section, I have a question from DanDanTheArtMan about podcasting my stories and what I’ve learned. Thanks for listening. Show Notes 00:00 — Opening – Get Published Episode […]

Or perhaps, worst of all, you write something you love only to have it rejected. And then rejected some more. I had thought I was ready to deal with any disappointment. After all, I’ve been rejected numerous times only to rise again and submit some more. That was until yesterday when I received a very polite, “Thanks, but no thanks” letter from a perspective employer. I’ve had those before, but never after investing so much of my time and energy. I actually applied in May of this year. Then in August, I […]

I’m coming up on my second anniversary of doing ‘Get Published’ and I’ve been very happy with the show. I’ve had the chance to talk with many great people and, I hope, I’ve shared valuable information with my listeners. But honestly, something has been missing. Listeners know the show has a feedback section. Regular listeners know I haven’t gotten much of it. Not questions, comments or, frankly, much of anything (that is not to denigrate those people who have commented and you know who you are. I have really appreciated all the comments I’ve received). It has felt… odd… I suppose is the word, doing other things in that section of the show and still calling it the “Feedback Section”. […]
