Let me begin by telling you what In Ashes Born is not. It is not high adventure in space. It is not filled with battles, semi-clad heroes and heroines and it is not a mile-a-minute adventure. It is also not a predictive, this is the future of humanity, sort of book. If any of those are things you demand in your space-born science fiction you should probably take a pass on this book. Terry Pratchett has long been a favorite author of mine. Once I discovered him (in my early 20’s) I couldn’t get enough of his books. Of his 41 Discworld books, I have read 41, most several times. This, is book number 41. There will be no book 42 as Sir Terry passed away in March. I haven’t quite come to terms with that yet, so this will simply be a review of the book, not a commentary on what the man has meant to me. This is one of those phrases I never thought would end in the word, “but”. And even though I have said those words, the “but” is a soft one. Still, it is important to explain why I have caught myself saying those words on more than one occasion. As a writer I love hearing how people are enjoying my work. As a writer who is trying to make a living writing, hearing this doesn’t help as much as you might think. I have known for a while that 2015 was shaping up to be an interesting year. Jack Kane and the Statue of Liberty (written with JR Murdock) is due for release in June from Burst/Champagne Books and I have submitted the manuscript for book 3 of Mik Murdoch (currently titled Mik Murdoch: Crisis of Conscience) to my publisher. But that is only the start. Jeff Hite and I are releasing the much anticipated (at least by us) anthology, Dimensional Abscesses in a couple very short weeks.
