I first met Jaym Gates and Erika Holt via Twitter. Jaym started out as a writer, added reporting, administrating and promotional work and then made a joke on twitter that led to her becoming an editor. Erika writes speculative fiction, is an intern for award winning anthologist Jennifer Brozek and reads slush for Scape, the e-zine of YA speculative fiction. Both ladies have a lot of great things to say about putting together an anthology including common mistakes writers make and why some stories are chosen while others are not. Dealing with Disappointment
If you are a writer, you have to get used to disappointment. Maybe your story doesn’t go the way you want it. Maybe it doesn’t go at all. Or perhaps, worst of all, you write something you love only to have it rejected. And then rejected some more. I had thought I was ready to deal with any disappointment. After all, I’ve been rejected numerous times only to rise again and submit some more. Listeners know the show has a feedback section. Regular listeners know I haven’t gotten much of it. Not questions, comments or, frankly, much of anything (that is not to denigrate those people who have commented and you know who you are. I have really appreciated all the comments I’ve received). It has felt… odd… I suppose is the word, doing other things in that section of the show and still calling it the “Feedback Section”. […]

I usually don’t talk about contests too much (my own or others) but I came across one that is too good not to talk about. CA Marshall, who you may remember from episode 32 of Get Published, is running a contest where the winner will receive a FREE substantial edit. Yes, you heard me right. A free edit of a manuscript up to 100,000 words with a focus on Plot, Character and Pacing. Not bad, huh? I know getting my work professionally edited (did I mention she is a professional editor) is high on my list of priorities and if you are hoping to get your work published, it should be on yours too. Just in case you are wondering […]
