I have discovered that not only am I still a newby at self-promotion, I’ve also been pretty naive.
You see, I had this idea that, once my book was published, all I would have to do to get a signing or have the chance to do an author’s reading is call the library or book store and make myself available.
Unfortunately, the truth is quite different.
- I’ve contacted my local public library branch. They pointed me to someone at the central branch. I contacted her. She never (EVER) returned my call. I emailed the main library’s help contact and they responded that my email had been sent to their promotions department. Again, I’ve never received a reply beyond that.
- I went to a local big chain bookstore that has a “Local Author’s” shelf. They told me they would be happy to have me come in for 45% of the cover price. The only problem is, I pay more than that per book myself. No kidding they would be happy to have me. I’ve marked that as “Thanks, but no thanks.”
- I’ve had representatives (teachers, library volunteers, etc.) from various schools say that they would like to have me come in. Except, when I reach out to them, nothing comes from it.
- The local yearly Young Writer’s conference, that I have volunteered at for the past 8 years and have made several contacts, has not replied to my request to come as a guest. I gave them everything they asked for and, as far as I know, nothing is coming from it.
- I went to another public library in my in-law’s home city. Talked to a librarian. Left my information, and, you guessed it, nothing has happened.
Maybe I’m just being too impatient. Maybe 6 – 10 weeks isn’t long enough to get an answer back. I don’t know. It is frustrating though.
All I can do is keep plugging away. Eventually (like when the second or third book is out) I might have some success. Here’s hoping.
In the mean time, if you would like to interview me or have me do a virtual reading or anything of that kind, please let me know. I’m sure I can find some openings in my schedule. 🙂
Hang in there. Promotion is one the scariest things to me about self-publishing. The best resource for me was online reviews. No sure how it works for YA. Maybe some book fairs will come around. Any local YA themed conventions?
Just remember it sometimes takes years to get a good story the attention it needs to reach it’s audience. I saw an interview with JK Rowlings. I didn’t realize it took her seven years to get the Potter series published.
True enough and thank you. I know it will take time. It was just a shock to discover how little interest the various groups would have. 🙂
I will let you know the only reason why I haven’t asked you to come into the shop is because boss lady’s told me twice that she’s waiting until after Christmas to take on new consignments. After taht, I’ll bug everybody until we get your books up, k? Deal? <3
