I hate talking about money. Hate it, hate it, hate it. I firmly believe that if you see value in something (like stories), you should support them. There are many ways to do this. One cheap and easy way is to talk about a writer’s work. If you like it tell people. Encourage them to sample that writer’s wares. Another is to use the donate button whenever available and throw a buck or two in the pot. I have a couple stories out there right now that depend on this model. Patience, perseverance and preparation are three words that tend to repeat a lot as my personal mantra. They are important to my writing life, my personal life and my work life too. I am starting to realize how difficult it must be for professional writers to keep everything going all the time. We amateurs may think all they do all day long is sit and write, but really there is so much more going on than that. Take my current list of projects and the associated activities. I have a book under contract. That means I will soon be doing revisions, marketing and promotion. The revisions seem straightforward enough, but the promotional and marketing elements could be huge. There’s nothing quite like starting a new job (or having a baby or buying a house or…) to throw a wrench into one’s writing schedule. As you no doubt read in earlier posts, I have been suffering a bout of writing doldrums that I only just started to drag myself out of. No sooner do I begin that fight than massive change hits. Don’t get me wrong, the change is a good one. It means working in my field again for a company that already seems pretty awesome.
