Day 20 – Ideas

I have often been asked where I get my ideas from. It is a question I’m sure many creative types have been asked, too. The short answer is, ‘Everywhere’. I get my ideas wherever I happen to be, doing or experiencing various things at any time of day. There’s no telling when an idea will strike. Why am I talking about ideas now? I know I’m participating in NaNoWriMo, writing Mik Murdoch 5. I’ve been exercising my creativity on a daily basis, coming up with more exciting ideas for this book. That doesn’t mean I can’t think about other projects. For example, I have a comedy I want to write. I’ve had the idea for a few years but I […]

I Need to go for a Walk

Walking is a favorite activity of mine. I get to go outside for the sunshine and fresh air. I get exercise and I occasionally meet someone I know or someone new. I also get the opportunity to clear my head and collect my thoughts. It has been a fantastic source of ideas for my writing many times. I have long known that ideas were the easy part of the story. Everyone has ideas about things all the time. It is the execution of the idea that makes it both unique and valuable. Since I first told the story of Scouts of the Apocalypse around the campfire and then podcast it I have seen evidence of several similar ideas. Scouts having […]

New Story Ideas

One of the real painful aspects of being a writer is…well, simply put, writing a quality story takes time. In fact, for me, the act of writing/revision/re-revision takes long enough that by the time I’m done, I’ve probably had two, three or more new story ideas. Naturally, the new story ideas are shiny and exciting…and totally out-of-reach because I’ve already got so many projects on the back burner. For example, I had an idea two nights ago for a quadrology (is that right? 4 books in the series?) The idea hasn’t left my mind since it first burst upon the scene. Problem is, I’ve got to get Mik Murdoch: The Power Within done, Jack Kane & the Statue of Liberty […]
