Get Published Episode 107 – Michael R Fletcher – Lessons of a First-time Author

On today’s show I have Michael R Fletcher. Michael is a writer, rock n’ roller, sound engineer and dad. He has had several short stories published and is about to release his first novel through Five Rivers Publishing. We talk about first time books, writing and what it’s like to be an unknown writer. I also talk about a question I receive quite often. It’s one most published authors have likely heard at some point in their careers. Namely, “how much did you have to pay the publisher to get your book published.” It’s a question I have some strong feelings about, especially with some trends in publishing I’ve noticed recently. That’s today’s episode. I hope you enjoy it. Show […]

Converted to the Rewrite

When I first became serious about writing I heard stories of people who spent huge amounts of time and effort to rewrite books from scratch. That never made sense to me. After all, you have already written something. Why would you want to write it again? The stories usually had some commentary about how the writing went faster and was much better. I still couldn’t wrap my head around the whole thing. Then, I went through the editorial process for Mik Murdoch, Boy Superhero. Get Published Episode 92 – Starla Huchton Talks Covers

Covers are a very important part of any book. A good cover can intrigue and encourage readers to try a book they might not otherwise look at and a bad one might just cause that same reader to pass it by. In today’s show, I talk to Cover Designer, writer, voice artist and podcaster, Starla Huchton about covers and what she thinks are important considerations. We also talk about how taking a chance in a writing contest has given valuable exposure to her writing. I also talk about something that I hadn’t really thought about before and that is an author’s signing survival kit. That’s today’s episode. I hope you enjoy it. What kinds of changes would my editor (and, by extension, my publisher) require? I was pretty lucky, actually. My editor, Robert Runte’ sent me the manuscript with all the revision requests marked PLUS an extra comments sheet. I think he was handling me with kid gloves so I wouldn’t spontaneously combust when I saw the edits. 🙂 I was grateful for his comments, but at the same time a little worried. What horrors awaited me? I waited a day before I opened the actual manuscript and, while there is some work to do, it wasn’t […]
