When I attended the 2012 “When Words Collide”, I had the opportunity to speak with a number of old friends and make a few new ones. One of the old friends is Tina Moreau. When I first, she was a young writer who also read slush for a local press. Shortly after that, she started to work as an editor for that same press. There have been several trends in the publishing industry over the past few years. Some are worrisome but many are extremely exciting. On the not-so-good side we have seen the consolidation of many publishing houses. Corporations have bought and merged many of the imprints we know and love. Publishing is now all about business where, in the past, there was a stronger emphasis on developing authors and building audience. Treating writing as a business is extremely important but it does make it much harder (in an already difficult field to break into) for first time authors to sell their work.
