The FUD Factor
For those of you who have never heard of FUD, it stands for “Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt” and has long been a tool used to sell things or coerce people into making a decision. In my case, the FUD factor is more about the upcoming launch of my debut novel, Mik Murdoch, Boy Superhero. Now that the book is done and totally out of my hands, those common doubts are surfacing: will people enjoy the story? will they even know the book exists? will it sell? For those of you who aren’t aware, May 25th is Towel Day, an annual celebration and tribute to Douglas Adams. Douglas Adams, in case you grew up without access to great literature (okay, that was tongue-in-cheek, honest!), was the creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, one of my all-time favorite books. I can’t even guess how many times I have read HHGttG or how many difficult times it has helped me through but it taught me to laugh at myself and especially not to take myself too seriously (I AM the Irreverent Muse, after all). Yesterday was a difficult day for me. After being on the road all day for work, I was asked by my wife to help her move the bed of a lady that she helps out at the Nursing Home. That isn’t a big deal, but this lady is nearing the end of her life and is quite out of it at the moment. So, I went to help and, after three hours of very emotional work, we had her settled in a better bed, had the truck packed with the old bed and were on our way home.
